Description

As an adviser to the attorney general and later to the premier of Ontario, Monahan attended the meeting at Meech Lake on April 30, 1987, as well as the meeting at the Langevin Block on June 2-3, 1987, and the week-long meeting of First Ministers in Ottawa in June 1990, at which the Meech Lake Accord, acknowledging Quebec as "within Canada a distinct society," failed to be ratified. He here traces how Meech Lake was put together, how and why it came apart, and the lessons to be learned for the future of Canada.
